This was signalled in ILO Convention 182 by the phrase ‘…work which, by its nature or the circumstances in which it is carried out…’ (Article 3d, my emphasis). Children’s working environment, their conditions of work, and especially their treatment by employers is a major influence on their well-being, but highly variable in potential to harm (or to benefit) children, even where children’s work is broadly similar in nature. Consequently, the extent to which children are at psychosocial risk may vary significantly within sectors, as well as between sectors.

Though there is a consensus about its historical and constructionist character, the same does not happen when the economic and social conditions are considered which make possible the disappearance of forms of exploitation in child work. Organisations interested in eradicating child work usually ignore the structural conditions surrounding child work in Third World countries. They promote social policies and programmes specifically designed to retire children from the work without considering the familiar, social and cultural conditions around these activities.

Forastieri 1997; Graitcer and Lerer 1998). Rather less progress has been made in the area of psychosocial hazards. Yet Boyden et al. argue: ‘…often children are at greater psychological or social risk than physical. This is because they lack authority and physical power, because their work is not always valued as a productive activity, and because they usually have the lowest status of all workers’ (Boyden et al. 81). This short paper summarises issues surrounding the psychosocial impact of child work (see Woodhead 2004 for a more detailed analysis).
