They describe and illustrate the wide range of theoretical models they draw from, including systemic and psychodynamic thinking, attachment theory and research, neuroscientific research, as well as psychiatric, psychological and cognitive behavioural models of assessment and intervention. In addition to these books there have been numerous papers describing various aspects of psychoanalytic understanding in a range of settings. While it would be impossible to do justice to all those who have contributed to this area of work, we wanted to highlight several contributions that have been particularly influential and have extended our understanding of children’s responses to early experiences of deprivation and abuse and how we as clinicians might relate to and conceptualise our own responses.
