52 Furthermore, in Hegel's new dialectical logic, "dialectical" has two meanings, a narrow and a broad one. " These inseparable moments of logical doctrine taken together are the dialectic in its broad sense, while the second moment is the dialectic in its "proper" sense. Hegel makes this clear: These three aspects do not constitute there parts of logic, but are stages or 'moments' of everything that is logically real or true. They belong to every philosophical Concept (Notion). Every Concept is rational, is abstractly opposed to another, and is united in comprehension together with its opposites.

The categories of the mind have only an empirical applicability. The concept of "noumenon" (Ding an sich, or "thing-in-itself') refers to what is not an object of intuition, or that which has no logical possibility of ever being known. Thus it refers only to the limits of possible knowledge, and not, as is often mistakenly supposed, to a transcendental object known through nonsensory intuition. 16 Noumenon is a "negative" or limiting concept for which there is no empirical or objective correspondence, and it would be erroneous, Kant argues, to postulate in the spirit of idealism or rationalism a dualism of empirical objects and transcendental objects.

And practical reason but suggests also that history is epistemological and epistemology historical. In other words, the phenomenological critique of knowledge must include the reconstruction of the constitutive experience of the history of mankind. 39 Thus we are led from epistemology as a categorization of a priori principles to epistemology as a philosophy of history. ' '40 In order to understand the meaning of this development for dialectical theory, we must turn to the dialectic of logic and history in Hegel's theory.
