In a British analysis of the link between child sexual abuse (occurring before 13 years) and factors such as later mental health and parenting behaviours (Roberts et al, 2004), sexual abuse was associated with negative outcomes in adulthood as well as teenage pregnancy, even after adjustment for other adverse childhood experiences. Research from other countries has confirmed the relationship between teenage pregnancy and abuse in childhood. In Romans and colleagues’ (1997) New Zealand-based study, four factors predicted teenage pregnancy: living in a non-intact family; having parents who argued; being physically punished after age 12; and not having had a confidante during childhood.
