Bird's remarks on Denver begin with a reference to its "brown cloud" of prairie dust, viewed from a hilltop to the north. , A Lady's Life, 4647, 51, 55. Yet all through this narrative of resentment, Bird's vision of Estes Park runs like a thin thread of gold in a drab tapestry. Sometimes actually seen from the plains, sometimes present only in her imagination, the image of the mountain haven is periodically invoked in her letters from the plains towns.

At home in Britain, she had been destined to follow the life of reticent seclusion and social benefaction deemed fitting for the daughter of a Victorian cleric. But due to poor healthshe suffered from a spinal injury that had plagued her since childhoodand a prescription to travel, Bird instead escaped to the mountains, eventually assuming a prominent place among travel writers in an age when travel was both a popular personal quest and a high calling. Bird set sail in July of 1872 on her curative trekfirst to Australia, then to Hawaii, and finally to the American West and Colorado.
