Decide on the toss of a coin if necessary (I’m not saying this is a good way to construct a story but it’s better to do this than to spend so many days worrying about it and not writing that in the end you lose enthusiasm and momentum and give up). Make your choice and run with it. Don’t fret about a character’s name or the kind of car they drive. Don’t panic if there’s a hole or inconsistency in the plot. Great chunks of this draft will subsequently be deleted, but much of it will make it through to later drafts.
Hardly seems worth it when you think of it like that. But 500 words can be written in less than an hour if you’re feeling inspired, and shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours at worst, and at the end of the first week you’ll have 2,500 words under your belt.
