3. You get free books. If you get paid, so much the better. If you continue to review within a specific field, you may find yourself invited to write feature reviews, articles in the field, even give speeches in the field. The biggest problems for most reviewers have already been mentioned. It’s tough to summarize a book and offer a useful judgment in one or two brief paragraphs. If you’re not sufficiently familiar with the related literature, your review may be misleading. If you’re pressed for time, you may be tempted to skim the book instead of reading it carefully, and that can lead to misleading or erroneous reviews.

At least one professionally edited article has appeared with a mistake I would never have made—but one that was easy for an editor to make. My own experience has been worst with freelance book copy editors who didn’t understand the library field. You typically don’t need as much grounding in comparative resources to review a CD-ROM, for example; there aren’t likely to be four works comparable to Totally Mad or Total Joplin.
