The Countach was commissioned by Ferruccio in 1970 to replace the famed Miura. Working with Bertone, Ferruccio unveiled the prototype at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. Ferruccio’s parting gift Painted bright yellow and featuring doors that opened up like the blades of scissors, the Countach had a mid-mounted engine, abandoning the Miura’s transverse design that other carmakers were only just catching up to. Leading the development of the Countach, Giampaolo Stanzani— now Lamborghini’s chief engineer—was clear on what the car was to be: a macchini sportive stradalei, a stable car on the road but easy to maneuver, offering comfort and luxury to both driver and passenger.

He set to work on a new project called the P132—soon to be called the Diablo. The company shopped around for designers and settled on Marcello Gandini, the designer of the Miura and the Countach, who had left Bertone to work freelance. Early modifications After the prototype failed to produce the increase in speed Lamborghini had hoped for, Chrysler helped redevelop the engine. 7-liter capacity and an electronic fuel-injection system, promising an astounding 492 hp. The Diablo boasted an estimated top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h), making it the world’s fastest production car.

All used the same Diablo engine. The Diablo SE edition had a 520-hp engine and a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h). The anniversary Countach Lamborghini hoped to unveil the Diablo in time for the company’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 1988. When it was clear the car would not be ready at the time, a final version of the Countach was commissioned instead. The anniversary Countach was praised as the finest version of the car to be built. 41 The Rambo Lambo Most Rambo Lambos were soon sold off to wealthy private owners.
