Both are as responsible for the future and well-being of the relationship and, in a heterosexual relationship, neither the male nor the female perspective should dominate. Men and women alike are considered accountable for the happiness or unhappiness of the relationship. 2 Individual choices are embedded in social constraints. One of the social and structural prerequisites affecting marriage and the familyto-be is the system of bilateral or cognatic kinship in Western societies, which means that both the mother’s and father’s relatives of both genders are considered as relatives.

When choosing their kin guests and delimiting who is in and who is out, couples define the borders of kinship and act upon their choice (Maillochon, 2009a). They not only reveal the shape of the family, but also give it substantive reality. Equality in the relationship understood as fairness between two families As mentioned, bilaterality is a structural feature of Western kinship whereby family members from both sides are understood as kin.
