By the 1830s Catholics, who were markedly poorer than their Protestant predecessors, had become the dominant group among Irish emigrants. The chapter examines in depth how the practice of assisted emigration allowed extremely indigent tenants and paupers, who could not otherwise afford the trip, to leave Ireland during the famine. In the mid-​nineteenth century, a growing number of Irish emigrants to North America either appeared outstandingly wretched or were unable to support themselves without becoming public charges in the new world.

Nevertheless, people found workhouses a better option than helplessly waiting for a miserable death at home or on the street. Still better than staying at workhouses as paupers for an indefinite period of time, many inmates concluded, was to emigrate and build a new life abroad. Workhouse officials had their own reasons to support the idea of overseas emigration—​the reduction of destitution in their districts and 16 17 Shov elling Ou t 17 the long-​term cost of maintaining paupers. Thus workhouses in Ireland sponsored the emigration of their inmates to British North America and the United States throughout the famine decade.

Such were the experiences of Irish migrants in the first half of the nineteenth century. From leaving their homes to landing at North American ports, every phase of journey could have an adverse effect on the appearance and health of migrants. Even if they survived the entire process, their financial and physical conditions were often too delicate to proceed farther from the port. The debilitated migrants frequently entered local almshouses or lunatic asylums soon after their arrival. Among those migrants were many future deportees from Massachusetts.
