58 GUIDE TO FURTHER READING The number of books published about education in Europe since the Second World War is immense, and this guide to further reading is not intended to offer a full list. It is, rather, what it says it is - a guide to the books that will enable the interested reader to find out more, and to help him to make use of the specialist publications that abound. UNESCO publishes World Surveys of Education at various levels which include material on all European countries. These are invaluable and are to be found in most good libraries.

This achievement is the more remarkable in that they are in the formerly poor parts of Europe where, before the war, educational standards were low and illiteracy was widespread.
