Aviation security is one of the most salient and important examples of security with which ordinary members of the public come into contact. Despite having one of the highest profiles and notably strict regulatory frameworks, there is a great deal of evidence – both anecdotal and, more significantly, statistical – exposing fundamental weaknesses in aviation security (something which is explored further below in the case study of September 11th). Airports are generally divided into two areas and to go ‘airside’ passengers have to be screened or have appropriate credentials to pass.

This is how we would like to imagine that airport security works. Unfortunately there are many more exposés and other evidence to illustrate that aviation security fails all too often (Hainmüller and Lemnitzer, 2003).
