Cultural and Political Division The word “tribe” should be used carefully when describing Indians in California, who varied somewhat in their organization. Typically, Indians lived in small village units of fifty to five hundred people. The village community was usually a land tract of individually owned property; some five hundred such groupings existed during the precolonial era. Some settlements were communities composed of a collection of villages under a chief ’s leadership. Ritual and kinship were important ties that strengthened and legitimized each local settlement.

Shells and shell beads were also traded widely, as were goods such as food, ornaments, household wares, clothing, tools, baskets, and raw materials. Chiefs typically held the highest position of leadership in California’s Indian villages and tribes. The chief directed the daily cycle of village life, overseeing the political and economic activities of each local settlement. The production and distribution of trade items and food also fell under the chief ’s management of the village economy. For example, the Costanoan, who were hunters and gatherers, left their base villages at certain times of the year under the direction of their chiefs and traveled in search of supplies and resources.
