67 The authors offered an interactive view of the social formation. They went beyond a focus only on class and emphasized the interrelations between racial, classed, and gendered dynamics. In so doing, they also explicitly attempted to resolve the tensions in radical research between structuralism and culturalism. Combining textual and ethnographic techniques, these educators directed their attention to the lives of students and teachers in schools Page 22 and demonstrated empirically the connections between educational practice and the gender, race, and class relations being built within the school.
By so doing, we will attempt to dissolve the current bifurcation in the literature between "structuralist" and "culturalist" perspectives by employing a more interactive framework in our examination of the intersection of the dynamics of race, class, and gender in schooling. For instance, while we will seek to specify the autonomy of racial and gendered relations from class, we will be arguing that they are interrelated. We see the social formation as an integrated, though contested, totality. Thus, though relations of race, gender, and class exist on autonomous and independent axes to capital, they intersect and are dependent upon each other for their reproduction and persistence.
My intent is to promote controversy by including authors who work from varying perspectives. While all focus on schooling, they do not do so in the same way. We do not offer the last word here.
