He has been a regular visitor to the hostel for several weeks, stopping by in the evenings to call in on Pete and Roger, whom he first met hanging around the games arcade in the town centre. Her efforts are overtaken by events, however, when Robby arrives at the hostel one morning with the news that his temporary living arrangements have miscarried, leaving him homeless.

Ann and Kevin suspect that this will not be the last they see of Ryan. And there would be nothing new in that. Not all those who leave the hostel are gone for good or, for that matter, for long. When Kevin gives his usual pep talk to departing residents, helping them load their bags into the boot of his car, he tells them the hostel has done its part and that now it’s up to them: Kevin: Let’s see how you do out there. We’ll see how you do on your own ... we’re going to challenge you and see what happens.
