As a concept is an idea devised to solve a design problem, you should turn the brief into a set of tasks and set parameters and objectives that will guide you through the process. Once your concepts are firmed up you should consider ways of testing them; this can involve interviews with audience members, materials analysis and investigating the marketplace.

Once you have a word, consider how it could be coupled with your project – think about what it may suggest, and see what associations it brings to mind. Nouns will make you think about how you can connect two things; if your brief was to undertake a branding project for a restaurant, and the random word was ‘school’, this could suggest any number of things – blackboards, lessons, writing, and so on. A verb such as ‘run’ or ‘fall’ might suggest how a concept could work, as they suggest movement and action.
